The Last Dragon Dance
A downloadable soundtrack
Using Musescore 4 with a MIDI keyboard, I created three 1-minute pieces of an exploration-fantasy soundtrack. I tried to capture location or scripted event moments rather than characters or battles. These tracks all need very few tweaks to become loopable, but for the purposes of this jam, I uploaded them as short pieces.
When I looked at the art of “The White Dragon,” what stuck out to me were the Asian elements of the dragon design, the floating islands in the distance, and the kindred kindness which the white-haired figure seemed to share with the dragon. So, I aimed to capture the inspirational, dramatic fantasy using shamisen, harp, flute, and glockenspiel as my main building blocks.
In “Crystal Lair,” I imagine the White Dragon’s resting grounds as a place of natural beauty, awe, and peace. In “Over the Stars,” I imagined how a credits or resting theme could capture what it’s like to sleep above the clouds, seeing the sun and moon rise up from underneath your feet. In “The Last Dragon Dance,” I had been sticking with a 6/8 time signature the entire time and leaned more into the waltz feeling with more epic orchestration, as Asian cultures don’t depict dragons as violently as European cultures do. Perhaps in this game, the primary conflict does not need resolution by battle, but by cultural salvation and proliferation.
I tried to push myself out of my boundaries, and with each track I composed I got more and more experimental—”Crystal Lair” is my default looping game track approach, but I started pushing chromaticism and more interesting rhythmic ideas in the other two pieces. When I was composing, the sounds I heard most in my head were the Final Fantasy 10 soundtrack and Pokemon… Overall I had a great time, this was super inspiring and motivating!
